The Truly Unconquered

Promotional blurb for documentary film

The Truly Unconquered follows inspiring, tenacious young achievers from homelessness, through foster care, and to the university. These students’ grit and unshakable courage not only reveal the scope of possibility within a neglected layer of society, but prove the strength and veracity of empowered youth.

The “Unconquered Scholars” program—which grants homeless youth the opportunity to attend college at Florida State University—provides students with both a blueprint for academic achievement and a sense of community, belonging, and value. For many of these disadvantaged students, education provides their only avenue toward a rewarding future. Truly Unconquered shows how a program geared toward their success allows their unique talents to shine, defying odds that were stacked so highly against them. Many “Unconquered” graduates had never even envisioned a future for themselves, but now they’re already enjoying their news lives and paying it forward.

This short documentary shares a family’s joy after successfully adopting two young siblings from the foster system; follows the legacy of a foster-child-turned-CEO who continues to advocate for homeless youth and lobby for systemic change; and shows FSU’s visionary capacity to invest in these students’ worth and provide wraparound services to support their emotional and educational needs. As programs such as “Unconquered Scholars” continue to expand and flourish, more foster care youth are graduating from college. With nationwide support, the possibilities would be unlimited. We can adopt these trailblazing scholars’ “unstoppable” attitudes and ensure that others can follow in their footsteps.
